Tucked away in the canyons of Lake Hughes at the edge of Angeles National Forest is Sawmill Mountain Vineyards. The boutique vineyard is family owned and operated and is part of an 850 acre working horse ranch. Alan and Denise Tyler acquired the property in 1999. This unique piece of land has been in the family for just shy of century. It was originally bought by Alan’s great grandfather in the late 1920s and was used as a horse property under the name of Sawmill Mountain Ranch. Following family tradition, Alan and Denise also own and breed racing quarter horses on the property.
Along with horses, the Tyler family had a great interest and passion for wine and would take annual trips to different wine regions in California. Their daughter, Alison, continued this interest in college and studied wine and viticulture at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and later became a Certified Sommelier. Together, the idea of having a family vineyard to call their own was envisioned.
In the spring of 2013 the first two acres of vines were planted. They are seperated into two different plots on the working horse ranch and include five different varietals: Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Grenache, Cabernet Franc and Tempranillo. The family implements sustainable farming practices and uses no pesticides or herbicides on the vines. Come harvest it’s a family affair! All the grapes are hand picked by the family to ensure optimum ripeness and care.
